Procedures & Requirements for the Single Subject Credential

Outlined below are some of the procedures and requirements concerning the single subject credential at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. A complete description of all such procedures and requirements may be found in the Single Subject Credential Handbook available in the School of Education Student Information Center, Building 53, Room 211. Mathematics students with questions concerning these procedures and requirements should contact the Math Credential Program.

Submit the following materials to the School of Education Student Information Center by the fourth week of the quarter in which you start the Credential Program.

STEP I Requirements

• Complete STEP I Application (pdf)
• Provide Evidence of Having Completed an Early Field Experience
  All students must have had recent supervised field experience prior to admission to the credential program. At Cal Poly, this requirement is satisfied by taking SCM 300 (Early Field Experience, Science/Mathematics) or an approved equivalent course. Students may take EDUC 300 (Introduction to the Teaching Profession) in quarters when SCM 300 is not offered to satisfy this requirement.
• Provide Evidence of Having Passed the CBEST
  All students must provide evidence of having passed the CBEST before they can be approved for STEP I. Students should take the CBEST at least one month prior to applying for admission to the university.
• Verify Subject Matter Competency
  Students must be certified as subject matter competent before they can enter student teaching. A Student can satisfy this requirement by completing an approved subject matter program (see Cal Poly's Program) or take the Math CSET.
• Minimum GPA
  Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.75 in their last 90 quarter units or 2.67 in all baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate coursework attempted. A student may be admitted with a deficient GPA, but the number of such admissions for the entire campus is closely regulated by the Chancellor's office. Exceptional admission is very unlikely.
• Other Competencies
  All students must demonstrate competency in writing and speaking English. This may be done by completing appropriate coursework or by passing certain tests. This requirement must be completed prior to student teaching. Students with undergraduate degrees from any CSU have met this requirement.
