Math Placement Exam Information and Practice Materials

Intermediate Algebra MAPE

Available only to students placed in: MATH 1000
Not available to students eligible for coursework beyond MATH 1000

Outcomes

  • 60% or higher → Eligible for Precalculus / College Algebra
  • 50% - 59% → Eligible for Stretch Precalculus / College Algebra

Topics include 

  • Elementary operations with numerical and algebraic fractions
  • Linear equations and inequalities
  • Quadratic polynomials, equations, and inequalities
  • Rational expressions
  • Graphing
  • Exponents and radicals
  • Logarithms and functions
  • Word problems

Precalculus MAPE

Available to students eligible for:

  • Precalculus / College Algebra, or
  • Stretch Precalculus / College Algebra

Not available to students placed in: MATH 1000

Outcomes

  • 60% or higher → Eligible for first-semester calculus
  • 50% - 59% → Eligible for Precalculus / College Algebra (if not already eligible)

  • Functions
  • Trigonometry
  • Operations with exponents and radicals
  • Logarithms and exponential functions
  • Word problems

Practice Materials

UC San Diego has created review modules that may be helpful for students preparing for the Math Placement Exam.

  • Students preparing for the Intermediate Algebra MAPE should review Module 1 in each topic.
  • Students preparing for the Precalculus MAPE should review Modules 1 and 2.

Sample questions for each exam are also available.

Attempt Limits and Sequencing

Students have one attempt at the Math Placement Exam. Students who earn a score of 60% or higher on the Intermediate Algebra MAPE may then be eligible to take the Precalculus MAPE. Outside of this sequence, additional exam attempts are not available.
