The Pacific Coast Undergraduate Mathematics Conference will be held Saturday, April 5, 2008 at Loyola Marymount University. Funding from the NSA is available to help fund student travel. We encourage students to attend and perhaps give a talk. They can use the funding to stay in the LA area overnight. The keynote speaker is Joe Gallian. There will be panel discussions about opportunities for undergraduate research and career options. The rest of the time is devoted to student talks. The deadline to apply for travel funding is this Friday, Pi Day (deadline may be extended; please check website). CSU Monterey Bay
April 12, 2008
The annual Mathletics math contest encourates excellence in math and recognizes the achievement of individual students and the schools they represent. In 2008, California State University, Monterey Bay will host the Mathletics competition in first-year college calculus. The competition for college students stimulates a healthy rivalry in mathematics studies between the colleges and universities in California. Each college or university can name up to six participants who are grouped into teams of three. The sum of the ranks of the individual team members determines the team rank. Plaques are awarded to the winning team. Students who place first, second and third receive prizes. Students who place fourth through tenth receive an honorable mention certificate. All students receive a certificate of participation. The competition is open to students enrolled in colleges and universities in California. We strongly encourage female students and students from under-represented minoritty groups to participate.

Friday is Admitted Students' Preview Day; all conditionally admitted students are invited to explore their colleges and departments and meet future professors and fellow students. Saturday is Open House for everyone to join the campus community for a day of exciting activities, including the morning Poly Royal parade, student club showcase, children's carnival, Poly Royal Rodeo, tractor pull, and Poly Canyon Design Village tours. Sonoma State University
Saturday, April 19, 2008
The Sonoma State University Mathematics Department is organizing an Undergraduate Mathematics Conference to be held on our campus in the spring semester of 2008 on Saturday, April 19. The idea is to give undergraduate mathematics students the opportunity to give or attend 15-minute presentations about projects they are working on. These projects can include undergraduate research projects, independent study projects, or any other independent work they are doing that goes beyond the standard course curriculum. The conference will conclude with an invited talk tailored toward undergraduate math students. We are very excited that Juan C. Meza from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory will be our keynote speaker giving a talk about "The Role of Mathematics in Amplifying Science Research."
We invite mathematics students to participate. We received a grant that will help pay travel expenses for student participants from other schools. Due to the grant, registration is free, and we will provide morning refreshments and lunch for all conference participants. We are very excited about this opportunity to actively involve undergraduates in the mathematics community, and we would love to have you encourage qualified students to give a talk at the conference. Undergraduate students from all years of study can participate and give presentations on any area of mathematics, including applications to other disciplines. While we do hope that many students will give a talk, students who just wish to attend are more than welcome. We also invite interested faculty to join us.
Registration for the conference will begin in mid February, with a speaker deadline in late March. To find out more about the conference, please visit the Sonoma State Undergraduate Mathematics Conference website. Information about travel reimbursement and other topics can also be found at the webpage mentioned above.
The previous conferences were great successes. Students and faculty from more than 20 Northern California and Southern Oregon universities and colleges participated, and each year featured 20-30 excellent talks by our student speakers on topics including Applications of Calculus, Mathematical Modeling, Geometry, Numerical Analysis, Voting Theory, Game Theory, Knot Theory, Combinatorics, Graph Theory, History of Mathematics and many others. - Spring Job Fair
