  • University of California, Santa Barbara NSF Support Available
UCSB has received a major NSF grant for a new multidisciplinary Ph.D. program. They are seeking qualified students and wanted to share the following information with any of you who are interested, or who know of another student who might be interested. The program spans environmental science and economics, but they are looking for a broad set of prospective students, including those quantitatively trained with majors in mathematics, natural sciences, engineering, agriculture and economics. The bulk of the 5-year, $2.7 million NSF grant is for student fellowship support. Accepted students will be offered a full four or five years of fellowship support which includes $18,000/year living expenses plus most tuition and fees.

The new Ph.D. program will provide rigorous training in economics along with some depth of training in a companion natural science. The four natural science focus areas are climate, applied ecology, hydrology and marine science. Because students will not have to deal with teaching assistantships, they will be able to undertake the more comprehensive curriculum.

Students need not have any economics preparation prior to entering the program. Those with solid preparation in math and the natural sciences with an interest in economics and environmental policy would be ideal candidates.

For more information on the program, see the UCSB Economics and Environmental Ph.D. Program website or contact the Program Director.
